Although you can't make changes to attributes that will affect the final output, you can change the colors assigned to the background (Transparent) and Unpainted to make it easier for you to work.
For example, if you are painting a character with a red skirt, you probably won't want to have a red background. You needn't worry about changing the color back when you've finished, because no matter what color you choose, it only affects the display you are working with, not the final output. So whether you choose red, green or orange, the background will always be transparent in the final output.
To choose a new color for the background:
